The misunderstood number of the beast (666/616)

When we are done looking into this mystery, you will be able to understand the truth of where it all came from and be help teach others that may be struggling with this topic because an overwhelming lack of wisdom and knowledge is the greatest deficiency in this day and age that needs to be remedied above all else. We’re just trying to obtain a new level of understanding.  Nothing wrong with that, right?

Okay, let’s look at the Book of Revelation, which is a forgery by the way, for those of you that don’t know that. The original being the “Mysteries of Osiris and Isis,” an Egyptian document, which was forged into a collection called the “Sibylline Oracles,” which was then forged around the Jesus character and once again reinvented into what we know today as the “Book of Revelation.” People often associate the Book of Revelation with an end-of-the-world-event, but in reality, it is only talking about the end of a zodiacal age.

Revelation 13-18 KJV

18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

You know what most people have done for the last two thousand years? They have looked at names that are attached to atrocities throughout history that have six letters, like Hitler, etc., but what about the other languages besides English with different spellings? It doesn’t mean that this perspective is wrong, just complicated. Let’s look deeper.

The problem is that it comes from gematria (a Kabbalistic method of interpreting the Hebrew scriptures by computing the numerical value of words, based on those of their constituent letters). It’s classical Greek writing, connected to Greek thought and that is where our interpretation has to originate or we are beginning at a point of misinterpretation that will ultimately lead to a further lack of understanding. What is interesting about this is that those who studied the scriptures from the earliest times found that the number really wasn’t “666” at all but it was “616.” That screws everything up and I’ll bet that you’ve never heard about it because religion and the churches have made this number all about the devil or something evil and they don’t want anybody messing that up. They need to keep promoting fear and separateness to keep people in line and to keep them coming to church, and by extension, tithing. It always comes back to money, doesn’t it?

With the true identity of the number not being known, it makes it difficult to break down the spiritual, numerological meaning that we can use to interpret the rest of the numbers in the Bible.

First, let’s break it down the esoterics.

If it is truly “666,” we can add up the number to get “18.” 6+6+6=18, and then we add the resulting numbers once more to get a single digit. So, 1+8=9, which is symbolic of consciousness in mysticism, and it can be its higher or lower aspects. The Book of Revelation is a highly mystical book, so much so that it almost wasn’t included in the Bible.

Okay, so obviously, since we are talking about the “beast” of Revelation, we can conclude that this is representative of the lower aspect of consciousness. We are the beast of Revelation when we dwell in our lower emotional nature. Gaskells defines “beast” as “Symbolic of the desires of the lower nature, with the animal instincts and appetites.”

If the true number is “616,” can we apply the same numerological method to decode it? Let’s find out. 6+1+6=13, and 1+3=4. The number 4 in mysticism is symbolic of our four-fold nature (spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical.) So, a possible interpretation could be something like “all of you, all four parts of your nature are dwelling in a lower state of consciousness.”

But since we don’t know the actual number, we cannot rely on using the standard numerical formula alone to find out the hidden meaning. But if we are looking at this mystically and not literally, the answer is in plain sight, correct? Dwell in your higher nature and not the lower. It confuses people because most factions of Christianity teach Revelation like it’s literally going to happen just the way it says in the Bible, which is lunacy.

Irenaeus, per Wikipedia, was a Greek cleric noted for his role in guiding and expanding Christian communities in what is now the south of France and, more widely, for the development of Christian theology by combatting heresy and defining orthodoxy, and in the second century reported several scribal errors of the number, there is still doubt by sound theologians about the original reading, as some recently discovered 3rd century early manuscripts of Revelation read “616.” This topic is a source of contention for many church groups and theologians. Some scholars contend that the number “666” is a code for the Roman Emperor Nero, others that “616” is a code for the Roman Emperor Caligula.

In actuality, 666 and 616 are most likely a reference to Nero. He persecuted the Christians without mercy and was hated by them. The Greek spelling of Nero adds up to 616, and the Hebrew spelling adds up to 666. Every letter in the Hebrew and Greek alphabets has a numerical value.

If the Latin (rather than the Greek) spelling “Nero Caesar” is transliterated into Hebrew (nrw qsr), the final “n” in Neron being omitted (and its corresponding value of 50), the name computes as 616, which is the number indicated in the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament (the fragment illustrated below). If “Neron Caesar” is correct, it may be that the Latin was transcribed incorrectly, perhaps because the copyist realized that this transliteration did not equate to 666 and so omitted the letter, which changed the sum to 616. Still, each digit of 666 is one less than seven, the perfect number (just as there were seven planets, seven heavens, and seven days in the week), and such mathematical play may have tended to establish 666, rather than 616.” Source: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/gladiators/nero.html

Some Protestant Bible commentators have equated the “beast” of Revelation Chapter 13 with the Papacy. Seventh-Day Adventists believe that the “mark of the beast,” but not the number “666,” refers to a future, universal, legally enforced Sunday worship, they go to church on Saturday. Some fundamentalists believe that the “mark of the beast” is related to the Catholic practice of making the sign of the cross. Irenaeus suggested that the number indicates that “the beast” is the sum of all apostasy (the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief) committed over the course of six thousand years. Futurists Christians believe that the number is associated with the Anti-Christ. Other Christians believe it to be associated with the functions of a credit card, and still others that it’s related to your social security number.

Good Lord, “Calgon, take me away!” Let’s try to gain some additional perspective because clearly, you’re not going to get that from any of the above people or organizations.

If we are looking at it from an “Anti-Christ” perspective, let’s propose the following. “666” or “616” is anything that gets in the way of you dwelling in your higher nature, the Christ within. What can we equate to that?

It’s not the government that neglects the poor and hungry and deprives people of medical care, it’s “666.” It’s a region of the mind that acts out in violence against others and against nature, that’s “666.” A region of the mind that is concerned with profit before people, profit before nature, that’s “666.” “666” is referred to as the carnal mind. Now what that means is that it’s the left side, the intellectual side, the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” because there’s a lot of good things you do but there’s a lot of rotten things we do, too and they all come out of the same side, the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.” You have to go to the “Garden of Eden,” which is on the right side where the “Tree of Life” is, but you can’t eat of the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil” and go there, which means you have to sacrifice or rise above the thoughts of the mind. You have to shut down thoughts, and when you do that you’re not taking of the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,” you’re taking from the “Tree of Life.”

No matter how much you pray, no matter how many times you go to church, no matter how many holy texts you read, no matter how holy you think you are, your mind will not allow you to live your life without “666” or “616” getting in the way. But, during meditation, you have the opportunity to rise above it. You can enter a state of bliss and eat from the “Tree of Life.”

Jesus has some great advice about how to raise yourself above “666”, “616,” the lower emotional nature or carnal mind:

Matthew 6-22
